Etruscans for adults and children

Discover the Etruscans in Populonia

Etruscan civilisation emerged around 800 BC and dominated part of central Italy for approximately four centuries before being absorbed into the Roman world. Skilled sailors and craftspeople, the Etruscans extracted precious metals from Elba Island and processed them in Populonia, the only one of the twelve Etruscan city-states built on the coast.
Today, you can discover their history at the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia, home to the acropolis, ancient burial grounds and the remains of a district once dedicated to ironworking. From its highest point, you can also enjoy beautiful views across the Gulf of Baratti.
To learn more about everyday Etruscan life, visit the Archaeological Museum of Populonia. Through archaeological finds, objects imported from Greece and an accessible reconstruction of a banquet, you’ll discover what the Etruscans ate, how they traded and the rituals that accompanied their journey into the afterlife.
